Paramount Pictures has confirmed in a press release that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Trek XI, with filming beginning later this year for theatrical release on Christmas Day 2008.

According to the press release, Abrams finalised the deal to direct the movie, which he is also producing along with Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof, last friday. The screen play will be written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who worked with Abrams on Mission Impossible III, and is rumoured to focus on a young James T. Kirk and Spock. Kurtzman and Ocri are also set to executive produce along with Bryan Burk.

"If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen," said Abrams. "Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone — life-long fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek."

The full press release is available at StarTrek.com.
